"The Chinese traditionally believe that pearls fall to earth
when dragons fight in the clouds above during storms, and dragons
are often depicted holding a prized pearl in their mouth or claws
as a symbol of immortality, magic, and luck. In India the pearl
was used for healing and protection, and in feudal Japan pearls
were prescribed for healing, longevity, and in love potions.
Diana, the Roman goddess of the moon and wild magic, was also the
goddess of pearls. During the Middle Ages gallant knights often
wore pearls onto the battlefield for protection. And in Hawaii,
the pearl was one of the body forms of Hina, goddess of the moon
and the ocean, and of Kanaloa, god of the ocean and healing."
